Joseph was one of the best known rifle shooters in the area and was credited with shooting the last bear in the district.

Joseph lost a leg in a hunting accident when he was standing next to an open foundation building and a rabbit went under it and whoever was chasing shot under the building hitting Joe's leg instead of the rabbit.

Joseph Nantais Shot Last Bear Here; Was Host To Hunters

Funeral services for Joseph Nantais, one of the Border's pioneer hotelkeepers are to be held Wednesday at 8:30 am from Sacred Heart Church. Prayers will be held at the residence prior to the church service. More popularly known as "Joe Beef", the late Mr. Nantais was one of the Border's most interesting characters. His hotel, 1313 Tecumseh Rd was known as the "Hunter's Home Hotel" and here Mr. Nantais was accustomed to entertain many of the best rifle shots in the district. The hotel was established on the farm he was born. His father, the late Nicholas Nantais was one of the earliest settlers here. Although retired for the past ? years, Mr Nantais maintained his relationship with all his old patrons and on many occasions regaled them with witty stories of his experiences in the early days of Windsor and vicinity. His prowess as a hunter was well known and he was credited with shooting the last bear to be brought down by a hunter in this district. He was the possessor of many trophies won at shooting matches. Surviving are his widow, Selvina. He was the father of 13 children, 10 of which survive: Mrs. Alex Parent, Joseph, Mrs John Newbeur, Mrs. Ralph Grover, Mrs. George Thornburn, Charles, Mrs. John Morneau, William, Edward, Adolphus all of Windsor. Three adopted children, Mary Rocheleau, Louise Leduc and Mary Wright, also survive.
