Nicolas NANTAIS [Parents] was born 1 on 18 Mar 1856 in Sandwich, Ontario, Canada. He died 2 on 26 Aug 1911 in 18 Howard Ave., Windsor, Ontario, Canada. The cause of death was Cancer of Stomach - 6 months informant Charles Nantais. He was buried 3 in St Adolphus Cemetery, Windsor, Ontario, Canada. He married Mary HOFF. He was baptized 5 on 29 Mar 1856 in Assumption, Sandwich, Essex, Ontario, Canada.
The family or sir name of our family when properly spelled is Nantais. For some reason, along the line, some of the family changed the spelling to Nantau. This spelling change was after Grandpa died. For Example, in our grandparents family there were eight children and this is how the spelling went after the change.
Note-Before the change all were baptized as Nantais.
Father-Nicholas Nantais RC
Mother-Mary Nantais RC
Son-Charles Nantau RC
Son-Henry Nantais RC
Son-Ernest Nantau RC my dad
Son-Alex Nantais RC
Daughter-Katherine Nantais RC
Daughter-Ida Nantau RC
Son-Clifford Nantau RC
Son-Norman Nantais RC
Our father having taken the spelling Nantau we were all registered with that spellingFather -Ernest Nantau
Mother-Lucy Nantau
Son -Ernie Jr Nantau
Son-Harold Nantau
Daughter- Florence Nantau
Son- Gordon Nantau
However, my father Ernest used both spellings apparently when he felt like it as on Marriage certificate (Nantau) Crossing cards (Nantais).
As for religion, Grandpa was Roman Catholic Grandma was Protestant. All eight children ere baptized Roman Catholic. Grandpa died first and told all his family before hand they could either follow the Catholic church or the Protestant church. they all decided to go with their mother as protestant, so we were all told besides other stories.
They our mother Lucy died, Harold and myself (Gordon), and my Dad went to order the monument stone from Clarkes Monuments, Ian Clarke knowing the family well and of the two spellings of the family anme asked us which spelling would go on the stone. Harold and myself both said Nantau. Dad spoke up and said spell the name properly Nantais.
That is why in Windsor Grove cemetery the stone monument reads Nantais.Grandpa Nicholas is buried in St. Alphonsus
