Family records indicate that Martha or one of the Lemon women was threatened with hanging by the British if she did not reveal where her husband, a soldier on the American side, was. The soldiers had a rope around her neck and she still refused to talk. It has been said that when the Lemons and Groves got together and came to Texas prior to the Civil War they undoubtedly created the most stubborn clan known to man.

OBITUARY: Bonham Daily Favorite, January 31, 1964, p. 6 SATURDAY RITES FOR MRS. GROVES - Leonard - (Spl) - Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock for Mrs. George F. Groves, 91, a long-time resident of the Grove Hill community, who died Thursday, Jan. 30, 1964, at Allen Memorial hospital in Bonham.

The services will be held in the Grove Hill Methodist church conducted by the Rev. Raymond Trompler, pastor of Southwood Methodist church, Dallas, former pastor at Grove Hill, assisted by the Rev. Howard Adams, pastor of the Whitewright Methodist church. Burial will be in the Grove Hill cemetery with Pat Wilson Funeral home directing.

Mrs. Groves was born Sept. 8, 1872, near Whitewright, the daughter of George and Lavina Blanton. She married George F. Groves Dec. 1, 1889. He preceded her in death Jan. 26, 1938.

Survivors are five daughters, Mrs. Lula Wilkinson of Whitewright, Mrs. Florence Smith of Dodd City, Mrs. Maude Roach of Austin, Mrs. Nellie Satterwhite of Leonard, Mrs. Ora Newman of Route 12, Bonham; two sons, Richard B. Groves of Amarillo and Joe T. Groves who made his home with her at Grove hill; 19 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, 34 great-great grandchildren and two sisters.

Active pallbearers will be John Hale, Roy Joe Travis, Howard A. Moore, Jimmie Gordon, Gene Starnes, Carl Ray Bailey, Joe Thomas Cook and David Travis. All are great-grandsons of Mrs. Groves.

Honorary pallbearers will be Neal Berry, Howard Sikes, Huse Freeman, Jack Owens, Marvin McLemore, Barney Roberts, Guy Robinson, Jesse Blanton, Weldon Macon, Roy Owens, Howard Smith, Frank Wright, Charlie Wilkinson, Allen Bowman, Kendrick Cook, the Rev. Charlie Graves, Med Williams and Dr. R.D. Van Schoick.

The family will be at Wilson Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday night. Each of the five is the oldest daugher in her particular family.
