Dear Mr. Baumbach:I will first introduce myself. My name is Anita Groves Cole. I am a descendant of Sarah Fergus, daughter of William Fergus. I retired from teaching in 1995 and have been doing family research off and on since then.I am visiting my sister in Ft. Worth, TX and will be here until Thursday. I live in Buford, GA and do not have my Internet hooked up, yet. That will be one of my first projects when I do return home. I was interested in your "filing cabinet".There is a book by Groves Harrison Cartledge, that contains much family history. He was a Presbyterian Minister. I found on a South Carolina deed that William Fergus married Margaret Armstrong. That's all I know about her. York, SC was once called Fergus Crossing. I did finally get James Fergus's application for pension transcribed. Part of his application is included in a book about the Revolutionary War.I have been in touch with Dan Fergus, Jr., an attorney, in Abilene, TX. He is a descendant of James. According to him, James married three time and had seventeen children. He sent me a copy of those descendants. I did not know that he served in the U.S. Congress.I did know that William served in the SC General Assembly. He was an iron worker. He and Margaret had one son, who died shortly after returning from the War of 1812. He served with Samuel Groves. My information is that there were four daughters. Sarah married Robert Groves and Rachel marriedhis brother Samuel. Their father, Stephen Groves, came over from England @ 1762 and married Isabella Weakley in Carlisle, PA. In 1787 several families (all of them Scotch Irish except for Stephen) moved south. When they got close to Georgia, they were warned that the Creek Indians were killing the settlers. They stopped for a year in Abbeville, SC., rented land, put in a crop, and then moved on to the Broad River in what is today, Madison Co., GA. They were instrumental in starting a Presbyterian Church there.I didn't bring my information with me this trip. This information is from memory. It is fascinating to me. All of my grandparents were born in Texas, but before that many lived in Georgia. It is relatively easy for meto go to these places and research first hand. I do want to make a trip soon to Elberton, GA. A person there is supposed to have quite a bit of information on the early Fergus family.Sincerely,Anita G. Cole
