Fred Stone often went by his middle name, Porter. This coincidentally prevented confusion with his nephew, also named Fred Porter Stone, particularly when they lived in the same small town, Goldendale, Washington. Eventually, his nephew went by the nickname "Stuffy". Stuffy is the son of Fred's brother, M.L. Stone.

Dona Lessie (Chambers) Stone went by her middle name, Lessie. She was known, however, as Grammie Stone to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Lessie learned to fly along with her son, Gary, and even took the written exam and check ride, which she passed with perfect scores. Unfortunately, World War II came along, and the U. S. government required all private airplane owners to dismantle their crafts, storing the engines at a separate, approved site which was at least 100 miles from the frame. The Stones owned two planes: a Porterfield and a Piper Bull Pup. Financial circumstances and a big move out to the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in 1943 prevented them from ever flying their aircraft again, and they were eventually sold.
